Though often misrepresented and romanticized, Gypsies, or the Roma, as they prefer to be called, have had a fascinating history.  Leaving the Indus Valley more than 1,000 years ago, they migrated first to the Middle East and Eastern Europe and then to the rest of the world, making an impact on the cultures with which they came into contact. Putumayo World Music presents Italian Musical Odyssey, a collection of music that provides a new perspective on one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. The album is filled with songs that resonate with echoes of the rustic Sicilian countryside, the picturesque villages of Sardinia, romantic Venetian canals, Piemonte's snowcapped mountains and much more. While Verdi operas and the soaring vocal strains of Andrea Bocelli are well-known around the world, the rich folk music traditions of Italy have yet to be widely discovered. Putumayos Pionier-Kompilation bietet exquisiten Nachhilfeunterricht und lässt uns gleich drei Spielarten des Son (den gibt's nicht nur auf Kuba!) entdecken, das vielfältige Erbe aztekischer Kultur, die rockenden Conjuntos des Nordens und innovative Songschreiberinnen aus der Heimat und dem Exil. Die Edda ist eine der berühmtesten Dichtungen und die wichtigste Quelle altnordischer Mythologie. „Music inspired by the Edda“ bezeichnet die zeitgemäße Umsetzung dieser gewaltigen Liedersammlung durch POETA MAGICA. Das Ensemble, in ganz Europa für grenzüberschreitende Interpretationen Alter Musik bekannt, begründete die Verknüpfung verschiedenster Musikstile zur „medieval-world-music“.
In dieser einzigartigen Verbindung von musikalischer Inspiration und instrumentaler Virtuosität läßt POETA MAGICA  in der CD „EDDA Vol. I“ die Götter, Helden und Mythen vor dem geistigen Auge wieder lebendig werden. Die ältesten Balladen Skandinaviens, überlieferte Folksmelodien und Eigenkompositionen erklingen so facettenreich wie die nordische Landschaft: Traditionell mit skandinavischen Instrumenten; klassisch mit Orchesterbesetzung, modern mit Einflüssen von Jazz und New Age. Rezitationen aus der Edda in altisländisch und Liedtexte auf norwegisch, schwedisch, finnisch als auch englisch eröffnen neue Perspektiven auf die Götterwelt des hohen Nordens.
Musikalisch beschreitet POETA MAGICA neue Wege und bleibt dabei seinem besonderem Stil treu. Den instrumentalen Schwerpunkt bildet die Nyckelharpa: So kommt bei dieser CD ein komlettes Nyckelharpaorchester und erstmalig die weltweit größte Nyckelharpa, eine von Holger Funke entwickelte Großbaß-Nyckelharpa zum Einsatz, als auch eine Nyckelharpa mit Vierteltonreihe. Namhafte Gastmusiker aus Skandinavien, so wie z.B. Tone Hulbaekmo (Kalenda maya) aus Norwegen, wirkten an diesem Projekt mit.

„Gates To A Secret Reality“ – die Wiederkehr eines Weltmusik-Klassikers
Ein weit offener Horizont unter einem endlos scheinenden Himmel, Berge von majestätischer Schönheit, Flüsse, die sich seit Millionen von Jahren beharrlich durch den Fels graben – Assoziationen wie diese rief die Musik auf „Gates To A Secret Reality“ Mitte der Neunziger bei vielen Hörern wach. Mit diesem Album hatte der österreichische Multiinstrumentalist, Komponist und Produzent Gandalf damals einen Quantensprung in Richtung einer völlig neuartigen Form von Weltmusik gemacht.
Die Inspiration dazu stammte von seinen Begegnungen mit der Kultur der Indianer, vor allem ihrer engen Beziehung zur Natur und ihrem wachen Bewusstsein für die Verbundenheit aller Elemente und Lebewesen in unserer Welt.
Auf einer Tournee durch Brasilien hatte Gandalf 1995 die englische Cellistin und Sängerin Emily Burridge kennengelernt, die mehrfach mit brasilianischen Ureinwohnern zusammengelebt hatte und u.a. auch mit Musikern wie Roger Daltrey, George Michael, Chrissie Hind, Jools Holland, Zero 7, Stereophonics und Hans Zimmer arbeitete. Bei einigen gemeinsamen Konzerten stellte sich Emily als ideale Kreativpartnerin Gandalfs für „Gates To A Secret Reality“ heraus. Ihre melodiösen Cello-Linien, sanft in Gandalfs vielfarbige Klangtexturen und Rhythmen eingewoben, und ihr sensibler Gesang auf drei Tracks gaben der Musik eine ganz spezielle Note. Aber auch Flötist und Saxophonist Peter Aschenbrenner, ein langjähriges Mitglied von Gandalfs Liveband, und Gandalf selber an diversen akustischen und elektrischen Gitarren, Charango, Saz, Piano, diversen Keyboards und Percussionsinstrumenten machten 1996 „Gates To A Secret Reality“ zu einem bis heute faszinierenden, einzigartigen musikalischen Ereignis.
